Much research has shown that Literacy is a
major determinant of Health. Our purpose in this project is to bring literacy
and health people together at training sessions to look at ways of improving
health and raising literacy levels in the hard to reach segment of
the population. Literacy workers will learn how to incorporate health materials
into their classroom. Health care workers will learn how to reach low literacy
clients. Resources will be offered to both groups.
Fifteen training sessions are being offered
across Manitoba at Regional Health Authorities. The project is being funded by
the Population Health Fund, Population and Public Health Branch, Health Canada,
in partnership with Manitoba Regional Health Authorities.
The training sessions will cover such topics
as
- Local literacy statistics
- Current research linking literacy and health
- Cooperation and collaboration between health and
literacy workers
- The use of health materials in the literacy
classroom
- Techniques of plain language writing
- Strategies to reach low literacy clients
See What We Do for a
typical training session agenda. See Schedule of
Training Sessions for dates, places and local contact persons.
Participants at the training sessions will be
encouraged to incorporate something learned at the session into their own work.
A six month follow-up survey will ask them how any of these new practices have
been successful.
