Session at Arborg on February 19,
2003
Thirty people - literacy instructors, tutors,
a learner, health educators, nurses, a public relations manager, and various
health personnel responsible for giving information to low literacy clients -
attended the training session at Arborg on February 19.
As we discussed the links between low
literacy and poor health, participants shared their own stories of low-literacy
clients who had suffered as a result of misunderstanding health directions. We
looked at ways of communicating more effectively with all patients - through
plain language, clear design, and good teaching techniques - then revised some
of the Interlakes's own documents.
Particpants went away aware of the importance
of keeping in mind their audience and purpose in any communication. One person
commented that she had learned "how to set up our pamphlets and discharge
instruction sheets so everyone can understand them".
It was an enjoyable day. Thanks to Sharon
Edmundson, her staff, and the Interlake RHA for hosting this workshop.
